The upcoming Candidates chess tournament in India will feature R Praggnanandhaa, 18, and R Vaishali, 22, who will become the first siblings to play against 64 squares.

The most significant advantage in sports is having a sibling who can play at the same elite level. Due to the non-compliance of that equation in chess, the siblings have been training separately as they work towards the most challenging challenge of their careers.

Both of them will participate in significant competitions. Their preparations have been largely dissimilar. That makes it very logical. The two players are participating in different events and have varying expectations. It’s worth noting that Pragg has a rating of almost 2750, while Vaishali has an average rating around 2500. There’s a disparity of nearly 250 points in that. Their opponents will be very much the same. They cannot play the same holes. It’s akin to showing all your cards to the opponents at first. The openings in Vaishali provide enough information about Pragg to prepare someone for him. We have been training separately for this reason. They are two separate individuals, despite being siblings. The Candidates are being given different needs, as stated by Ramesh.

At the suggestion of Viswanathan Anand, Vaishali had also begun training with grandmaster Sandipan Chanda, who has been second to Anans in some World Championship matches.

The Candidates’ actions in the next few days will be dominated by the sentiment of not exhibiting your cards. In an interview with The Indian Express, Dr Rajinikanth, Gukesh’s father and a competitor of the Candidates from India, declined to provide an exact number on how many trainers and seconds the 17-year-old is training with for the Campaign. Although it may not be a deliberate decision, it reinforces the idea of getting ready for preparing for an event with significant stakes like the Candidates: your preparation can be fully utilized.

Ramesh frequently overlook details about Pragg’s preparation, such as the training location prior to the Candidates. Ramesh reveals that Pragg’s preparation for the exams was centered on his fitness. Due to the stress and strenuous nature of the tournament, players can lose thousands of calories daily during their participation. Achieving victory or disaster at an event dominated by first place can be decided by a brief moment of physical fatigue that causes one to lose focus.

“He has been attending events since January, and we have been preparing for him whenever he is not competing. Several major tournaments were played by him, including Tata Steel at Wijk Aan Zee and Prague Masters. In the meantime, he has been training for the Candidates for almost 24 hours. Ramesh emphasizes the importance of physical fitness and has been participating in various sports, including beach volleyball, for several weeks.
According to Ramesh, Pragg has been prioritizing his starting strategies over a middle or final outcome.

Our attention has been primarily directed towards the gaps that may arise for the Candidates. According to Ramesh, they tend to concentrate on other aspects in addition to other tournaments, but this year, we’re concentrating on openings.

Why are openings a concern?

“If you want to win, it’s crucial to get something out of the way. With the advent of computers, overcoming that hurdle is becoming more demanding. All top players are equipped with high-quality computers and have a good preparation. Despite the usual outcome, most games end in a draw. According to Ramesh, having something special is crucial for playing and he will be supporting Pragg from Chennai instead of travelling with him to Toronto.

The development of Pragg and Vaishali has been under the guidance of Ramesh, who is the ideal person to follow Prag’s evolution into a candidate.
Ramesh claims that his ward has improved, not only from a technical standpoint but also from being easily off the board in fewer days.

“He’s a self-reliant and selfless child.” His current outlook is one of being confident that he can reach the top, which was always his aspiration. From my childhood, I had faith in him without any doubts. From a young age, his aspiration to become eminent world champion was unwavering. It wasn’t just that he had that dream, but also the responsibility of pursuing it. There was some uncertainty about the jump he made in his career, but it turned out to be premature when a player started playing against 2700-rated GMs regularly. Nonetheless, he managed to handle it with great skill. That stage must have given him the assurance that he is in good hands. I’m proud of him for having made such a significant progress, but not his best performance yet. Ramesh believes that there is still time for the best.
